About Warehousing

In a world with perfect supply chains, warehouses wouldn’t exist. Goods would move quickly straight from the producer to the consumer. However, in reality that is not the case and warehouses are needed, and if you don’t have a warehouse you might be costing you big. Warehouses are an efficient tool for storing and creating an uninterrupted flow of materials in the supply chain from the producer to the consumer.

What Is The Difference Between A Warehouse And A Distribution Center?

People often use warehouse and distribution center interchangeably, but they are not the same thing. All distribution centers are warehouses, but warehouses are not distribution centers. The main difference between the two is that a distribution center has a space for fulfilling orders, whereas warehouses are designed to store large measures of goods for extended periods of time.

Just because the flow of products in and out of a warehouse isn’t as fast as in a distribution center doesn’t mean a warehouse slows down your supply chain. There are many benefits to having your own warehouse as well as a distribution center. Building up a store of products to desirable levels until you can move them is a necessary step in the supply chain. Some products move faster than others and having a large supply at your warehouse will help keep movement steady when demand for your goods are high.

If you sell snow shovels, in July there is little to no demand for such a tool. But when the first snowstorm of December hits, you are able to move those shovels quickly to the snowiest areas of the country. As demand grows for snow shovels during the winter, your stock of shovels will keep stores in a consistent supply. As the snow melts and producers keep making snow shovels, you can build up your supply in your warehouse, so you are prepared for the winter when demand is high again.

In a distribution center, products that are stored there are designed to move quickly and storing products a large quantity of commodities for long periods take up can take up precious space. When inventory is accumulated in large quantities, it is best to store the products in a warehouse until they are ready to be distributed.

For goods that are affected by world market prices, a warehouse is a great asset to keep costs down. Accumulating products when the price is low and then selling when the price is favorable is a way you can turn your warehouse into a profitable investment.

With a strong inventory and understanding the seasonality of your products, means that you accurately predict your staffing needs throughout the year. This forethought and flow of goods can help keep your overall costs down in your supply chain.
